Stand Up For Jesus

By: Bill Bratt

All of us Christians have probably sung the song ‘Stand Up For Jesus’ many times. Have you ever noticed that when you are singing that you don’t always pay attention to the words that you are singing!

Let’s take a look at the words of this song ‘Stand Up For Jesus’.

Verse 1: "Stand up, stand up for Jesus stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the word."

What does it mean to Stand Up? We are to stand straight, unchanged, committed, to stand firm in your position in battle, stand firm in your opinion and conviction.

Jesus said in John 6 verse 14, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

We must Stand Up for Jesus in the truth that He taught us.

Notice what Jude says in verse 3, "I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints."

We must stand firm in the faith and teachings of Jesus that He taught us.

Line 2 of verse 1: "Lift high His royal banner, ye must not be deterred."

Notice the words, "royal banner." Jesus is royalty. He was born to be a king. Revelation 19 verse 16 says, "And Jesus has on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

Line 3 and 4 of verse 1: "From victory unto victory his army shall he lead. Till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed."

Let’s notice what John recorded in Revelation 19 verse 15, "Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God."

Line 1 of verse 2: " Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey."

When you think of Jesus and a trumpet, the Last Trumpet comes to mind.

The apostle Paul records the following in 1 Corinthians 15 verse 52, "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

Jesus Christ will return at the last trumpet and at this point in time the first resurrection occurs when the saints are resurrected (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Line 2 of verse 2: "Forth to the mighty conflict in this, his glorious day."

‘His glorious day’ is referring to the day in which Christ returns.

Revelation 11 verse 15, "Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!""

Line 3 of verse 2: "Ye that are men now serve him against unnumbered foes."

Who does the apostle Paul tell us to serve? Colossians 3:24 "Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ."

Line 4 of verse 2: "Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose."

Line 1 and 2 of verse 3: "Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone." "The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own."

Who are we to put our trust in? Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding."

Line 3 and 4 of verse 3: "Put on the gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer." "Where duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there."

The apostle Paul said in Ephesians 6 verse 11, "Put on the whole armor of God." {14} Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, {15} and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; {16} above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. {17} And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Line 1 and 2 of verse 4: " Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long." "The day the noise of battle, the next, the victor's song."

Revelation 16:14 "For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (called in Hebrew, Armageddon.)." {15} Jesus said, "Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches."

Line 3 of verse 4: "To him that over cometh a crown of life shall be."

Let’s notice what Jesus says in Revelation 2 verse 26, "He who overcomes, ..... I will give power over the nations." Notice the crown of life in the following verse: "Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him" (James 1: 12).

Line 4 of verse 4: "He, with the King of glory, shall reign eternally.""

1 Thessalonians 4:17 "Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord."

In Conclusion: Stand up for Jesus!
