Lesson: Resurrection from the Dead

Email: info@icogsfg.org

SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Corinthians 15:1-58.

GOLDEN TEXT:  1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.

1. Did God form man out of the dust of the ground, breathe the breath of life into him and did man become a living soul (or being)? (Genesis 2:17.)

Note: The word "soul" in the Hebrew is the word "nephesh" and means "a breathing creature, i.e. animal, beast, being, body, man, mind, person, mortality." See Strong’s Concordance # 5315. It shows that man is mortal.

Can the soul die? (Ezekiel 18:4, 20.) What did Jesus say about the soul? (Matthew 10:28.) Did Jesus say that we are to fear God who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell?

Note: When the writers of the New Testament quoted from the Old Testament passages where the word "nephesh" ("soul") was used they used the Greek word "psuche" which was equivalent and had the same identical meaning as the Hebrew word "nephesh."

2. Do the following scriptures say that man is mortal? (Job 4:17, Deuteronomy 19:11, Romans 6:12, 1 Corinthians 15:53-54, 2 Corinthians 4:11.)

Note: The definition of "mortal" is "a human being, subject to death, relating to or connected with death."

3. Does the "key verse" of the entire Bible mention that man can perish and is this perishing contrasted with eternal life? (John 3:16.) Does the apostle Paul also mention that the "wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life?" (Romans 6:23.) Notice that eternal life is a gift from God. Are we to seek this gift of eternal life? (Romans 2:5-7.)

4. If man is mortal then what happens to him at death? (Psalms 146:4, Eccl. 9:10, Psalms 6:5, 115:17.) In death man is as one who is "asleep" with no mental or physical activity in the grave.

5. What kind of hope does man have? Did Job ask the question: "If a man dies, shall he live again? (Job 14:14-15.) Did Job know that there would be a "change" coming in the future? (Verse 14.) Did Job know that after he died that God would call him from the grave and that he would stand on the earth and see God? (Job 19:25-26.) Did Isaiah know that the dead would live again? (Isaiah 26:19.) Did David have "hope" in a future resurrection? (Psalms 16:9-10.) Did Daniel and Hosea know about a future resurrection? (Daniel 12:2, Hosea 13:14.)

Note: To "resurrect" means to raise from the dead: restore to life.

6. Hebrews 11 is called the "Faith chapter" where many of God’s faithful are listed including: Abel, Enoch, Noah Abraham and Sarah. Did these all die in the faith not having received the promises? (Hebrews 11:13.) The "Faith chapter" continues to list Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, and others. Does Verses 36-38 discuss how some of God’s "faithful" were tortured and killed? Does Verse 39 also mention "all these" died in the faith not having received the promises? Does Verse 35 mention a "better resurrection?"

7. Is this "better resurrection" also called the "first resurrection" and are the Saints in that resurrection blessed and holy? (Revelation 20:6.) Does the second death have any power over the Saints who will be resurrected in this first resurrection? (Same verse.) Will the Saints rule with Jesus Christ for a thousand years? (Same verse.) Will they rule and reign on the earth? (Revelation 5:10, 2:26-27,20:4.)

Note: Notice the terms ‘better resurrection" and "first resurrection" which are hints that there are more than one resurrection.

8. Does Daniel hint at more that one resurrection? (Daniel 12:2.) He says that some will awake (be resurrected) to shame and everlasting contempt. Did Jesus talk about a "resurrection of life" for those who have done "good" and a "resurrection of damnation" for those who have done evil? (John 5:28-29.) Did the apostle Paul talk about a resurrection of the "just"and the "unjust?" (Acts 24:15.)

Note: Daniel, Jesus and Paul talks about two resurrections but they do not say that both groups of people will be resurrected at the same time.

9. Could the resurrection to eternal life be possible if Christ had not died to pay for our sins? (John 3:16.) Does the death and blood of Jesus Christ justify us? (Romans 5:8-10.) Is it His resurrection to life that makes our resurrection possible? (Same verses.)

10. Does our baptism symbolically represent our dying and being resurrected? (Romans 6:3-5)

Note: When we go into the waters of baptism, this represents us dying and being buried. We must give up our sinful past and overcome our sins. When we come up out of the waters of baptism, this represents our being resurrected to a new way of life. Then after a life of overcoming and when we physically die, we can be resurrected when Christ returns.

11. Is being a part of the first resurrection the goal and hope of every true Christian? (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17.)

12. When the Saints are resurrected, will they be composed of spirit and not physical matter? (1 Corinthians 15:42-44.) Will the first resurrection happen quickly, in the twinkling of an eye? (Verse 52.) Will there be a loud trumpet blast? (Same verse.) Did Paul call this the "last trumpet?" (Same verse.) Will we mortals put on immortality? (Verse 54.)

13. Will the Saints who have been resurrected in the first resurrection have eternal life and not be able to die? (Matthew 22:30, Luke 20:34-38.) Will they be like the angels, yet not angels? What will our "spiritual body" be like? (1 John 3:2, 1 Corinthians 15:5-8 ,44, Acts 1:3, Matthew 28:9, John 20:24-29, Luke 24:37-39.) We will be like Jesus was.

14. Is the "Resurrection from the dead" one of the six foundational doctrines of the New Testament Church? (Hebrews 6:1-2.)

In Conclusion: We should strive to "be good", "do good", overcome so we can be in the "first resurrection." The first resurrection is spoken of as the "better resurrection" because those who are in it will be wonderfully blessed of God.

Scriptures

Scripture Reading:

The Resurrection of Christ

(1 Corinthians 15 NKJV) Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, {2} by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you; unless you believed in vain. {3} For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, {4} and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, {5} and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. {6} After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. {7} After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. {8} Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. {9} For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. {10} But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. {11} Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

The Resurrection of the Dead

{12} Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? {13} But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. {14} And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. {15} Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up; if in fact the dead do not rise. {16} For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. {17} And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! {18} Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. {19} If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. {20} But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. {21} For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. {22} For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. {23} But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. {24} Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. {25} For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. {26} The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. {27} For "He has put all things under His feet." But when He says "all things are put under Him," it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. {28} Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. {29} Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead? {30} And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour? {31} I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. {32} If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!" {33} Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." {34} Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

The Resurrection Body

{35} But someone will say, "How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come?" {36} Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. {37} And what you sow, you do not sow that body that shall be, but mere grain; perhaps wheat or some other grain. {38} But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body. {39} All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. {40} There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. {41} There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory. {42} So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. {43} It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. {44} It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. {45} And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. {46} However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. {47} The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. {48} As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. {49} And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. {50} Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. {51} Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed; {52} in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. {53} For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. {54} So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." {55} "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?" {56} The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. {57} But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. {58} Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Golden Text:  (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NKJV) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. {17} Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

1.) (Genesis 2:7 KJV) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7 NKJV) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Ezekiel 18:4 NKJV) "Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die. (Ezekiel 18:20 NKJV) "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. (Matthew 10:28 NKJV) "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

2.) (Job 4:17 NKJV) 'Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker? (Deuteronomy 19:11 NKJV) "But if anyone hates his neighbor, lies in wait for him, rises against him and strikes him mortally, so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities, (Romans 6:12 NKJV) Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. (1 Corinthians 15:53-54 NKJV) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. {54} So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." (2 Corinthians 4:11 NKJV) For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

3.) (John 3:16 NKJV) "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (Romans 6:23 NKJV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 2:5-7 NKJV) But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, {6} who "will render to each one according to his deeds": {7} eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;

4.) (Psalms 146:4 NKJV) His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish. (Ecclesiastes 9:10 NKJV) Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going. (Psalms 6:5 NKJV) For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks? (Psalms 115:17 NKJV) The dead do not praise the LORD, Nor any who go down into silence.

5.) (Job 14:14-15 NKJV) If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, Till my change comes. {15} You shall call, and I will answer You; You shall desire the work of Your hands. (Job 19:25-26 NKJV) For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; {26} And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, (Isaiah 26:19 NKJV) Your dead shall live; Together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; For your dew is like the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead. (Psalms 16:9-10 NKJV) Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. {10} For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. (Daniel 12:2 NKJV) And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. (Hosea 13:14 NKJV) "I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.

6.) (Hebrews 11:13 NKJV) These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (Hebrews 11:35-40 NKJV) Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. {36} Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. {37} They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented; {38} of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. {39} And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, {40} God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

7.) (Revelation 20:6 NKJV) Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years. (Revelation 5:10 NKJV) And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth." (Revelation 2:26-27 NKJV) "And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations; {27} 'He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels'; as I also have received from My Father; (Revelation 20:4 NKJV) And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

8.) (Daniel 12:2 NKJV) And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. (John 5:28-29 NKJV) "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice {29} "and come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. (Acts 24:15 NKJV) "I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.

9.) (John 3:16 NKJV) "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (Romans 5:8-10 NKJV) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. {9} Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. {10} For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

10.) (Romans 6:3-5 NKJV) Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? {4} Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. {5} For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,

11.) (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 NKJV) But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. {14} For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. {15} For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. {16} For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. {17} Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

12. (1 Corinthians 15:42-44 NKJV) So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. {43} It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. {44} It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

13. (Matthew 22:30 NKJV) "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. (Luke 20:34-38 NKJV) And Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. {35} "But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; {36} "nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. {37} "But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' {38} "For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him." (1 John 3:2 NKJV) Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. (1 Corinthians 15:5-8 NKJV) and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. {6} After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. {7} After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. {8} Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. (1 Corinthians 15:44 NKJV) It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. (Acts 1:3 NKJV) to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. (Matthew 28:9 NKJV) And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, "Rejoice!" So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. (John 20:24-29 NKJV) Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. {25} The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." {26} And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to you!" {27} Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing." {28} And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" {29} Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (Luke 24:37-39 NKJV) But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. {38} And He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? {39} "Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have."

14.) (Hebrews 6:1-2 NKJV) Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, {2} of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
